Students continue to study Mathematics in the areas of Geometry and Measures, Probability and Statistics, Number and Algebra, Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change
The use of a calculator is expected throughout the course and students are expected to have one of their own, in order to develop its effective use.
The grading system for Mathematics is numbers 9 – 1 (9 being the highest)
Grade 4 – standard pass, Grade 5 - Higher standard pass
Students who do not achieve at least a grade 4 are required (by Department of Education) to continue to study maths post 16

Mathematics is regarded as one of the most important school subjects by employers and by training and further education establishments. Working with numbers and shapes is fundamental to most activities in everyday life, whether at work or leisure.
In colleges and sixth forms, a sound Mathematics background is essential for the study of many courses, especially those linked to Science, Engineering, Technology, Computing, Geography, Economics etc.

Additional information of use to students/parents during study
- This is a 2 year course only
- All assessments will be linear, with 100% exam
- A level Maths will have 100% prescribed content, containing both pure and applied (no optional content).
- Mechanics and Statistics will be part of the compulsory content for A level Maths students
- It is essential that students study independently to consolidate and improve their knowledge, and supplement teaching time with additional private study. Resilience and an ability to work through a task even when it is difficult is key to success.
CALCULATORS
Students may use a calculator in all examinations. They are responsible for making sure that their calculator meets the guidelines. Calculators used MUST include the following features
- An iterative function
- The ability to compute summary statistics and access probabilities from standard statistical distributions
Assessment takes place at the end of the 2nd year. It consists of 3 written papers with a combined total of 6 hours - Paper 1 & 2 Assess Pure mathematics content, Paper 3 – Assesses Statistics and mechanics

This is a 2 year course only
All assessments will be linear, with 100% examination.
A level Further Maths will contain both pure and applied mathematics; a small proportion of this can be optional – we study Decision and Further Mechanics.
Further Mathematics is taken alongside A Level Mathematics
