Understanding Your Child’s School Report
Welcome to the Reporting Information Page. This section is designed to help parents, carers, and students better understand the attainment grades and Behaviour for Learning (BfL) grades included in school reports.
What Does the Attainment Grade Represent?
The attainment grade provided by subject teachers reflects the current quality of work your child is producing across all learning contexts:
- In class
- At home
- In assessments
These grades are not fixed and may change throughout the academic year as a student’s performance develops. The grade is supported by a student’s behaviour for learning, which includes their effort, engagement, and attitude.
Subject-Specific Criteria (Years 7–9)
Students in Years 7, 8, and 9 are assessed against subject-specific criteria for each academic year. These criteria outline the knowledge and skills students are expected to meet by the end of the year.

Behaviour for Learning (BfL) Grades
The BfL grade reflects your child’s effort, attitude, and engagement in lessons. We use a 5-point scale to provide a clear, consistent overview of their approach to learning.
O
Outstanding – Exceptional effort and behaviour
A
Above Expected – Consistently strong engagement
M
Meeting Expectations – Positive and appropriate engagement
B
Below Expected – Effort and behaviour need improvement
U
Unacceptable – Serious concerns around effort and attitude
Outstanding (O)
A student with this grade consistently demonstrates exceptional behaviour for learning. They:
- Always arrive on time and well-prepared with the correct equipment
- Focus immediately and actively engage with tasks
- Show initiative and independence in learning
- Exhibit excellent behaviour and sustained concentration
- Take full responsibility for their own learning and meet all deadlines
- Communicate well and respond positively to feedback
Above Expected (A)
This student frequently demonstrates strong learning behaviour They:
- Are almost always punctual and fully equipped
- Engage quickly in tasks and often show initiative
- Demonstrate excellent behaviour and perseverance
- Respond positively to feedback and seek improvement
- Consistently meet deadlines and produce high-quality work
Meeting Expectations (M)
This student regularly demonstrates positive learning behaviour. They:
- Are mostly punctual and prepared
- Usually focus on tasks and may show initiative
- Demonstrate generally good behaviour and concentration
- Respond to feedback and seek help when needed
- Usually meet deadlines and show evidence of independent learning
Below Expected (B)
This student is not consistently meeting expectations. They may:
- Arrive late or without correct equipment
- Need frequent reminders to stay on task
- Show limited engagement and struggle with concentration
- Be reluctant to seek help or act on feedback
- Miss deadlines and underperform relative to their ability
Unacceptable (U)
This grade is given when a student consistently fails to meet even the minimum expectations. They:
- Do not demonstrate basic preparation or punctuality
- Show persistent disengagement and poor behaviour
- Rarely respond to feedback
- Consistently miss deadlines and avoid responsibility for learning
- Fail to meet most of the “ Below Expected “ criteria on a regular basis.
